Surround
The Hype Surround 5.1 and Huger seems more active than ever ... except for sale.
Back in the early days of Dolby Digital and DTS, I was about to publish multi-channel music formats. I still do.
The fact is that I do not support "Dolby Digital" or "DTS" 5.1 or 6.1 or what approach makes little sense to me, speaking in an economic sense, because it forces you to sacrifice convenience for the audience. Remembermusic can play in the room to leave and hear from the kitchen.
So I think that many people simply do not bother to go through the purchase of a DVD of music only by the imagination of the sofa to sit, "while exploring the 5.1 surround sound business. I speak for myself, with numerous high-definition surround sound track sound, I * just * heard about this in the first scenario where so rarely.
What I think should be the way?
Stereo still rules
No matter what the lowest price for players to get into a lot of DVDs or a compression algorithm, multi-channel, the question is ... The main thing is still music, do you whistle and top of toes, or leave with goose bumps.
The truth of the matter is that now matter how well people get home-cinema systems to use as much as the music, the issues that probably only very common in a normal audio CD or SDCard or anything else is interested.

Coding
So for me, the solution with respect to investments in music production audio is still with the approach of stereo as root, and ... lead to a certain level, if necessary, surround. Although there are lots of ways to do this are, I use two (Please note that for high-definition content The MLP and WMA Lossless)
- Windows Media Audio multi-channel encoder (or similar) - Dolby Prologic or similar
Remaining examples, WindowsMedia Audio, you can encode multiple audio channels, but down-mix stereo clear when listening to music in stereo. Dolby Prologic, if the version II, which encodes a 5 (0.1) IIx matrix in a stereo file, if it goes to 7.1, and even if the audience can enjoy the stereo (with iPod hype, for example, and headphones ) may also, if in the mood for the source in Hi-Fi, ProLogic decoder turn properly and get the full 5 (0.1), the channels of stereo files ormore.
There is some loss of quality of phase encoding do file a stereo surround for extra channels, but for the Reasons above, some of which related to the kitchen / room scenario, if this difference does not make that much difference.
Please note the ".1" in all cases where the sub-bass channel is to be handled automatically, therefore, removing the bass from all channels, not a separate channel in Logic, but you can with Windows Media willAudio.
Speaking of five-channel surround sound, the problem with Windows Media Encoder Surround (and similar), which encode, like all channels, the file size is about is saying to you, for the sake of argument, bigger than a simple stereo would be (in Logic encoded stereo) - not good for the bandwidth (especially in high-quality, high bit-rate versions).
On the other hand, if you have a file encoded in stereo Prologic II, would be the size of the sheer size normal stereo, so are somesometimes less if you count the tricks of compression, containing all channels. Good for bandwidth, better for high bit rates without concern for size, and you can listen to an iPod or at home with your pride and joy around 5.1 home cinema system with a simple, small, simple Stereo brilliantly downloaded file.
This means, it is also good, ProLogic only burn on a normal stereo CD ...
My voice
Then, you may have guessed, my vote goes for plainProLogic stereo coded data and this is probably my future direction, if not stay with simple stereo - which option would be zero, the original vote, but I like to add value, and multi-channel does exactly that.
keep the other side, and defend, I multichannel HD (24bit/96kHz) 5.1 in his heart, to be developed to be sold to the highest quality, but only on the material standard for real appreciation - I am not a supporter one tabletHigh-Definition Multi-download, I want it all, linear or at most 75% of it (WMA Q75-mode quality similar MiniDisc). :-)
The future
I believe the future can do a very good effort for many hours of welding some insist on going through a good mix 5.1 (have a lot of really lousy sound). The fact is that DSP (Digital Signal Processing) is a large amount of processing power they have to take any audio signal, and do whatever they want withit.
Thus, from a crappy mono feed, you can end up with an excellent 12.2 artificial, but realistic surround environment, and by moving in real time, as now in most games. So my motto is to focus on music, balance, production, emotion and stereo, with optional extension of a well mixed 5.1 (in fact the opposite is true, but who cares) on grounds of marketing and personal pleasure, of all these considerations would be enough is prohibited.
